Important Class Information...Please read

Prior to taking your breastfeeding class...find out the qualification of the instructor teaching the class. It does make a difference!

Our breastfeeding classes are taught by Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) or Certified Lactation Educators/Counselors (on their way to becoming an IBCLC Certified). An IBCLC is a health care professional who specializes in the clinical management of breastfeeding. IBCLC’s are certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners Inc.

Our classes will teach you "how to do it" learn common mistakes to avoid, positioning techniques, find out what to expect in the hospital and when you return home, how to achieve a great latch and much more! Our Consultants have a combined knowledge of about 50-years of training in this specialty field. Our instructors give you the best information they have come across in their many years of training.

Additionally, our staff continuously attends training conferences to bring you the most recent advances in the field. We encourage you to visit the Breastfeeding Center and learn how we can assist you in this important time in your family’s life!

  • Announcing MUMS Café’
  • A Mum’s Café is where breastfeeding moms can meet up in a relaxed way and get some support too! (10am to 12 noon) A professional of the medical community, an Experienced International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) will be on hand to any questions you may have. Come socialize and meet new mothers and our professional will be on hand if you have any questions. Knowledge is power!

  • ***Breastfeeding Class - Fee: $20 per couple
  • These classes are taught by Certified Lactation Consultants/Counselors and are 2 hours in length. In this 2 hour class you will learn how the breast works, getting started in the hospital, the first two weeks, pumping and storing and much more. These classes are ideal for new moms and the experienced mom wanting additional knowledge. In this class you will learn the steps on “How to do it!” Sign up quickly as the breastfeeding classes fill up fast.

  • ***Birth & Baby on a Budget - Fee: $20 per couple
  • This is a class a 2 hour class designed to provide you with basic budgeting information allowing you to better plan for your pregnancy and the arrival of your baby. Topics covered include: differentiating between wants and needs, the importance of saving and different ways to save, being a wise consumer, managing debt, and ways to reduce baby's financial impact. Our accredited financial counselor has helped parents understand their current financial situation and plan for their future. This instructor is also a caseworker and Budget for Baby instructor with the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society. She has helped hundreds of parents with the often daunting task of budget development.

  • ***Breastfeeding and Returning to Work Class - Fee: $20
  • In this class you will learn basic skills in order to handle the difficult decision of returning back to work. In this class we will cover: Making the decision to continue breastfeeding, Choosing a pump, When/Where/How, pumping, childcare options, putting it all together, and other problems encountered. This class is also taught by one of our Certified Lactation Consultants.

  • ***Infant CPR & First Aid Class - Fee: $20 Per PERSON
  • This class prepares parents in First Aid and Infant CPR - This class is taught by a certified instructor but is for informational purpose only. You will not gain certification in is class, but you will learn what to do in the first five minutes of an emergency. You will learn techniques for newborns including but not limited to trauma, CPR, and choking: how to prevent and what to do if this happens. At the end of class the instructor can check to make sure you car seat is installed properly.

  • ***Infant Care Class - Fee: $20 per couple
  • This class prepares new parent on the basics of caring for a new baby. We teach expectant parents on comfort techniques, baby cues, crying, eating, sleeping, diapering, umbilical cored care, circumcision care, jaundice, bathing, general health and safety.

  • ***Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Class - Fee: $20 per couple
  • This class prepares parents on reducing the risk of Crib Death or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome(SIDS). We discuss back sleeping, bedding, room sharing, pacifiers at bedtime, overheating, smoking, secondary caregivers, what you can do before the baby is born, what to do after the baby is born, how to prepare a safe nursery and more.

  • ***Silly Sibling Class - Fee: $15 first child, $10 per additional children
  • This class prepares young children for the arrival of their new baby sister or brother. They are shown how to change diapers, feedings, how to hold the new baby, the importance of clean hands and handling their feelings. Each child will receive a bag containing items to assist mom and dad with the arrival of the new baby. Please bring their favorite baby doll or teddy bear.

  • **** Comfort Measures for Normal Birth - 3-4 hour workshop Fee - $60 per couple
  • This class is designed for couples (and other labor support) who are entering or in their third trimester and especially those who are soon to give birth. Class will cover various techniques that can provide support to expectant mothers in working through the discomforts of pre-labor, early labor and labor itself (active and transition), and improve the progress of labor and natural birth. Participants will practice massage, the use of the birth ball, the rebozo, yoga positions, and various techniques to make mom feel more comfortable. This class will especially benefit those couples who are interested in an un-medicated birth or laboring at home before going to the hospital or for second time couples who want an abbreviated refresher course. This is an interactive workshop, so please bring 2 pillows and a blankie!!

ABOUT OUR CENTER

The Breastfeeding Center of Wilmington encourages and supports all new mothers with compassionate care, quality service, and the most up-to-date information on lactation available. Our goal is to assist new moms with breastfeeding and to answer any questions that may arise. We want the best for mom and baby and we are here to support and lend a helping hand if needed.

We pride ourselves on our education for the professional community as well as our parents; bringing them the most current researched-based information. We strive to empower all mothers with the most current information, knowledge and confidence in order for them to have a successful breastfeeding experience. We serve as the Breastfeeding Resource Center for the Cape Fear Area that educates, supports, guides and encourages each mother as she learns to nurture her baby.

Our staff, including IBCLC’s (International Board Certified Lactation Consultants) and CLE’s /CLEC’s (Certified Lactation Educators and Counselors) can offer expert advice so many women need to successfully breastfeed their infants. Our CLE’s /CLEC’s have been through an accredited program through the AARC (Accreditation and Approval Review Committee) on Education in Human Lactation and Breastfeeding. As skilled professionals, we design & instruct educational programs on breastfeeding, organize support groups for new mothers/families and provide individual lactation consultations at our Center or in the home.

At the Breastfeeding Center we provide an environment that is friendly, where parents can bond with other parents and share their experiences. We value each and every one of our families and believe that this kind of support is a good investment in our community and future.
