WILMINGTON’S RESOURCE CENTER FOR WOMEN WHO PLAN TO BREASTFEED.
“After the birth of my own child and understanding the importance of breastfeeding, I realized Wilmington’s need for a resource center that could provide assistance to breastfeeding moms,” says Traci Brewer, owner of the Breastfeeding Center of Wilmington. “Breastfeeding wasn’t as easy as I hoped it would be—upon returning home from the hospital with my little one, I realized I still had questions and concerns. Rather than give up and switch to formula, I decided to educate myself on breastfeeding. Now, I want to offer my support along with Certified Professionals to assist any new mom that plans to breastfeed.”
Recently the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) revised the guidelines in which new moms should breastfeed. The AAP recommend breastfeeding until the baby’s first birthday or longer. Some of the benefits of breastfeeding are: breast milk increases immunities for your baby; breast-fed babies have fewer allergies, ear infections, digestive and respiratory illnesses and fewer bouts with colic; breastfeeding meets the emotional needs of babies and can help them feel more secure; and breastfeeding is perfect nutrition for babies, as mothers milk changes as your baby grows.
Since opening we have added many valuable services to the Center. Our Breastfeeding Classes have been very popular and beneficial to our new moms. In this two hour class you will receive a wealth of information including: how to get off to a good start, how to achieve a “good” latch, how the breast works, getting started in the hospital, the first two weeks, pumping and storing, and much more. It is recommended you take this class as close to your due date as possible. Sign up today as the classes fill up quickly.
If you feel you need a little more assistance or just the reassurance that every thing is going well you can make an appointment to see one of our Certified Lactation Consultants. They are trained professionals with many years of experience and are dedicated to making sure that you are successful in nursing your new baby. They will guide you and follow-up with you to make sure you don’t have any uncertainties about breastfeeding.
Did you know that most women are wearing the wrong size bra? That’s especially true when you are pregnant. Finding a bra that fits properly is most important when you are nursing. The Breastfeeding Center of Wilmington offers Certified Bra Fitting. Most healthcare professionals recommend that a mother be fitted for her nursing bra during the final weeks of pregnancy (last 2-3 weeks before due date) or after the baby is born. Because a woman’s breasts are changing so dramatically at this time, fitting too early may result in an improper postnatal fit. It is also very important to realize that a nursing woman may need several different bras to accommodate her changing breasts during the 4-6 weeks after the baby is born.
The Breastfeeding Center of Wilmington is dedicated to providing a wealth of information on breastfeeding--a library of DVDs and videos are available for checkout at no charge. We are also a licensed dealer for Medela® breast pumps and carry a full line of pumps for purchase or rent, as well as replacement parts and accessories, breast care products, pump cleaning products and specialty feeding devices for babies with cleft palate and other special feeding needs. For expectant mothers, we carry Medela’s Maternity Support Belt, which eases back pain by gently lifting and supporting the stomach, and for new moms, Medela’s Postpartum Support Belt, for abdominal support and control after delivery (these are especially soothing after a c-section). We also offer a full line of stylish nursing wear for the modern mom.
As you are planning your baby showers don’t forget to sign up for our NEW Gift Registry. This is a great way to let friends and family know exactly what you need to aid you in having a successful breastfeeding experience. Other products offered are: Hands free pumping bra, Soothies® Gel Pads – they soothes sore nipples, Lily Padz® – a non-absorbent nursing pads, Mama Jewels® – a sparkling reminder of which breast to begin a feeding, BustBuddies® – a reusable warm/cool breast treatment packs, Bravado® breast pads with CoolMax® lining, Motherlove® – a herbal supplement, Breastfeeding Books, Diaper Bags, Nursing Stools, Hooter Hider® – a chic nursing cover, Burt’s Bees® – Baby Bee products, Bobux® – baby shoes that stay on, So Easy Baby food Kit, Nursing Slings, the New Native Wrap, breast milk storage options – trays, bags, freezer bottles and other helpful products.
